Nothing except the production date! Volkswagen/Audi frequently updates part numbers to reflect minor manufacturing improvements, supplier changes, or updated brazing techniques across production years. The original 06E117021G has been fully superseded by the newer, updated 06E117021L factory revision. They are 100% interchangeable.

2. Why is my coolant brown and sludgy?

Because the engine oil system operates at a much higher pressure than the cooling system, an internal crack inside this oil cooler will force oil directly into the coolant passages. This mixes the two fluids together, creating a thick, brown, milkshake-like substance in your coolant reservoir. If you see this, do not drive the car—replace this cooler immediately and flush the cooling system!

3. Does this include the necessary mounting seals?

No. This oil cooler mounts to an adapter plate in the engine valley using highly specific "figure-8" shaped rubber sealing rings. These seals must be purchased separately and replaced entirely with brand-new rubber during installation to prevent future leaks.

4. How difficult is the installation?

Replacing the oil cooler on the 3.0T requires removing the supercharger, the intake manifolds, and navigating the complex plumbing in the valley of the engine block. It is a labor-intensive job.
