Why should I replace both the left and right sides at the same time?
Replacing air struts in pairs is highly recommended. Because both front struts have endured the exact same mileage, road conditions, and compressions, the rubber air bladders degrade at the identical rate. If your left strut has popped, your right one is undoubtedly on the verge of failing. Replacing them together ensures your vehicle sits perfectly level and saves you from paying for a wheel alignment and labor twice!
Will driving with a leaking air strut damage my car?
Absolutely! If you ignore a leaking front air strut, your vehicle's main Air Suspension Compressor will be forced to run continuously to pump air into a leaking system just to keep the car off the ground. This will quickly overheat and completely burn out the compressor motor, turning a simple strut replacement into a multi-thousand dollar repair bill.
Do these include the electronic dampening controls?
Yes. These are complete, plug-and-play assemblies that include the integrated Electronic Damper Control (EDC / VDC) solenoids at the base of the strut. They will plug directly into your BMW's factory wiring harness to maintain the active suspension modes (Comfort, Sport, Adaptive).
Can I just replace the air bag and keep my old shock?
Unlike older platforms, the front air struts on the G11/G12 chassis are fully sealed, integrated units. The air spring cannot be separated from the internal shock absorber. The entire strut assembly must be replaced as one unit.
