Timing Belt: The Defining Service Item

The F136 engine uses a timing belt, and Ferrari specifies replacement every four to five years regardless of mileage — a belt on a low-mileage stored car still deteriorates from heat and age. On the 458 the engine must be removed to reach it, making this a 20 to 40 labour-hour procedure. Because the engine is already out, replace the water pump, accessory belts, tensioners, coolant hoses and spark plugs at the same time. Sourcing a complete kit before the engine comes out is far cheaper than a second engine-out shortly after.
