Why did my original crank pulley fail?

This is one of the most common mechanical failures on the Audi 3.0T engine. The factory rubber dampener that bonds the inner and outer halves of the pulley degrades from engine heat and the high-tension drag of spinning the supercharger. Once the rubber shears, the outer ring spins freely or flies off entirely.

Does this include the mounting bolts?

No. The harmonic balancer is held to the crankshaft by highly specific Torque-to-Yield (stretch) bolts. Audi strictly mandates that these bolts must be replaced with brand-new hardware every single time the pulley is removed. Reusing old bolts can lead to the pulley backing out and destroying the engine.

What are the symptoms of a failing harmonic balancer?

Before it completely separates, a failing balancer will visually wobble while the engine is idling, often causing a rhythmic "chirping" or squeaking noise from the belts. Once it fully fails, you will lose power steering, the alternator will stop charging, and you will smell burnt rubber from the friction of the separated metal halves rubbing together.

Can I use this if my car is tuned?

This is a stock-diameter replacement pulley designed for factory supercharger boost levels. If you are running an aftermarket "Stage 2" dual-pulley tune, you will typically need an oversized aftermarket crank pulley. If you are running a stock tune or a Stage 1 tune, this OEM-spec replacement is perfectly fine.
