The vacuum pump is located at the very rear of the engine's cylinder head, pressed tightly against the vehicle's firewall. Because of the extreme lack of clearance between the engine and the firewall on most chassis (especially the 3 Series and 5 Series), replacing this pump requires patience, a mirror, and specialized low-profile tools.

Most premium OEM-spec pumps will come with a brand-new main sealing O-ring pre-installed on the mounting flange. However, you should always inspect the part upon arrival to verify. If a seal is missing, you must install a new one (BMW part 11127507217) before bolting it to the cylinder head to prevent instant oil leaks.

While aftermarket O-ring kits exist to fix the external oil leak, they do not fix internal mechanical wear. If your pump has over 70,000 miles on it, the internal rotors are likely worn. Replacing the entire assembly is the safest, most reliable long-term fix, preventing you from having to do this difficult, tight-clearance job twice.
