Q: What are the signs that my electric water pump or thermostat is failing?
A: The most common early warning sign is the engine cooling fan suddenly running at maximum speed constantly (sounding like a jet engine). Shortly after, you will receive a yellow, then red engine temperature warning on your iDrive screen, followed by reduced engine power (limp mode). If the thermostat fails, you may also notice poor cabin heat and a Check Engine Light.
Q: Do I need to buy any extra hardware to install this kit?
A: Yes, it is strictly required by BMW to replace the aluminum water pump mounting bolts. Because the engine block is magnesium/aluminum, BMW uses single-use aluminum stretch bolts that will snap if reused. You will also need BMW-approved coolant to refill the system.
Q: How do I bleed the coolant system after installing these new parts?
A: Because this pump is electric, it has a built-in automated bleeding procedure. Without starting the engine, turn the ignition on, set the climate control heat to maximum and the fan to low, and press the accelerator pedal to the floor for 10-12 seconds. This will activate the automated 12-minute bleeding cycle.
