Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Actuator

OEM Electronic Parking Brake Actuator | EPB Motors

Genuine OEM Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Actuators

The electronic parking brake replaced the mechanical handbrake across most of the European range, and it changed what fails. Instead of a cable stretching, an electric actuator motor mounted on each rear caliper drives the piston in and out. When one fails, the car throws a parking brake malfunction warning — and that warning is very often blamed on the control module when the actuator or its connector is the actual fault.

We supply genuine OEM EPB actuator motors, connectors and associated hardware across every marque we serve, matched to vehicle build and production date. Send us your VIN and we will confirm before you order.

Actuator, Connector or Module?

Most EPB faults are the actuator motor or a corroded connector, not the control module. Modules are expensive and frequently replaced unnecessarily. The actuator motors sit at the rear calipers, exposed to road spray, heat and vibration, and they are the component that wears.

A fault on one side only points strongly at that side's actuator or its wiring rather than the module, which would typically affect both.

Check battery and charging health first. Low voltage produces EPB faults among a wider cascade of codes that clears entirely once voltage is restored. On a car that has been standing, this is the most common cause of an EPB warning.

A grinding or straining noise on engagement indicates a motor working against a seized caliper piston or corroded guide pins — replacing the actuator without freeing the caliper repeats the failure.

Critical: Retract the Calipers Before Rear Pad Service

This is the point that costs workshops most often. On an EPB-equipped car the rear calipers must be retracted electronically via diagnostic equipment before pads can be changed. Winding the piston back mechanically, as on a conventional caliper, damages the actuator — and that damage is not covered by warranty because it is an installation fault rather than a component defect.

Service mode must also be exited and the system recalibrated afterwards, or the parking brake will not apply correctly.

What to Know Before Ordering

  • Left and right are distinct part numbers on most platforms.
  • Replace the connector where heat or corrosion damage is present. A degraded connector is frequently what killed the actuator, and reusing it repeats the failure.
  • Consider replacing in pairs. Both actuators have done the same work over the same period, and the labour overlaps with rear pad service.
  • Recalibration is required after replacement on most systems.
  • Inspect the caliper itself. A seized piston or corroded guide pins put the actuator under load it was never designed for.

FAQ

I have a parking brake malfunction warning — do I need a new module? Usually not. The actuator motor or a corroded connector is the far more common cause, and both cost a fraction of a control module. A fault on one side only points at that side's actuator rather than the module.

Can I change rear pads without diagnostic equipment? No. The calipers must be retracted electronically first. Winding the piston back mechanically damages the actuator, and that damage is an installation fault rather than a warranty claim.

The motor makes a grinding noise when applying. That usually means it is working against a seized caliper piston or corroded guide pins. Free the caliper as well, or the new actuator fails the same way.

Should I replace both sides? Worth considering. Both have done the same work over the same period, and the labour overlaps with rear pad service.
