Ferrari Parking Brake Malfunction: Causes, Fixes, Reset Procedures & Costs

Few things rupture the euphoria of exotic Italian supercar ownership quite like turning the ignition key, pressing the start button on the steering wheel, and greeting an amber or red warning light across the digital instrument cluster: "EPB Malfunction – Go to Dealer" or "AVH Failure."

Modern Ferraris—from the naturally aspirated V8 458 Italia and the twin-turbocharged 488 GTB/Pista to the V12 flagship 812 Superfast and F8 Tributo—feature an intricate, highly sensitive Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) integrated with the vehicle’s Automatic Vehicle Hold (AVH) system.

When this system faults, it can range from a minor annoyance that clears with a key cycle to a catastrophic failure that leaves a $350,000 supercar clamped solid in a garage, unable to be loaded onto a flatbed without risking severe underbody and drivetrain damage.

This comprehensive guide breaks down the architecture behind Ferrari’s parking brake failures, how the AVH system interacts with the calipers, step-by-step DIY reset procedures, realistic repair costs, and in-depth expert case studies for the 488 GTB and 812 Superfast.

Understanding Ferrari’s Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) and AVH Architecture

To successfully diagnose and rectify a parking brake error on a Ferrari, you must first dispel the notion that the parking brake is merely a digital version of an old-school handbrake cable.

On Ferrari models engineered after the F430 generation (starting predominantly with the California and 458 Italia), the emergency and parking brake system is entirely electromechanical:

The Physical Setup: Integrated vs. Standalone Calipers

Depending on the model and vintage, Ferrari uses two configurations for the rear axle:

Standalone EPB Spot Calipers (California, 458 Italia early models): A secondary, compact Brembo motorized caliper mounted adjacent to the primary hydraulic braking caliper on the rear carbon-ceramic discs (CCM).
Motor-on-Caliper Integrated Units (488, F8, 812, Roma, SF90): A single high-performance multi-piston rear caliper where an electric servo motor and planetary reduction gearbox are bolted directly to the back of the caliper body.

The Brain: The EPB ECU and CAN-Bus Interfacing

The electric parking brake does not operate in isolation. It relies on continuous real-time communication across the vehicle's high-speed Controller Area Network (CAN-Bus) with:

The Bosch ESP / ABS Module: Monitors individual wheel speeds to prevent dynamic wheel lockup.
The Body Control Module (BCM): Evaluates whether doors are open, seatbelts are latched, or the transmission is in Neutral, Park, or Gear.
Longitudinal & Yaw Sensors: Senses incline angle when resting on an incline.
AVH (Automatic Vehicle Hold) Logic: Keeps hydraulic pressure applied to the brakes at stoplights, automatically transitioning clamping force to the electromechanical parking brake motors if the car remains stationary for extended periods.

Because these control units cross-reference hundreds of parameters every millisecond, any discrepancy—such as an unexpected drop in millivolts or a microsecond delay in sensor feedback—prompts the computer to trigger a defensive fault, disabling auto-release mechanisms and illuminating the dash with warning messages.

Ferrari Electric Parking Brake FAILURE: Top Symptoms & What Happens

When the EPB or AVH system goes offline, your Ferrari provides very distinct behavioral clues. Understanding what these symptoms indicate physically will keep you from panicking or damaging the vehicle.

1. The "Clamped Solid" Lockdown

The most stressful scenario. You attempt to drive away, but the rear motorized servos refuse to wind back. When you tap the throttle, the rear of the car squats severely, the tires drag or skip on the ground, and a piercing dashboard warning chimes. The transmission may refuse to engage first gear or reverse as a safety countermeasure.

2. The Flashing Amber Park Symbol & Rapid Center-Console Blinking

The system attempts to engage or disengage, but the control unit fails to register the physical limit switch or amperage threshold. The LED inside the console pull-tab flashes rapidly, signifying that the motor is out of position or stalled mid-travel.

3. "AVH System Failure" at Red Lights

While waiting at a traffic light with your foot off the brake pedal, an unexpected chime sounds, accompanied by the message "AVH Not Available" or "AVH Failure." The car abruptly creeps forward. This indicates that the transition between hydraulic holding pressure and electromechanical motor engagement has failed the system's internal sanity check.

4. High-Pitched Caliper Screech or Strained Buzzing

Upon toggling the switch, you hear an unusually loud, strained whining noise from the rear wheel arches, followed immediately by an error code. This points to mechanical resistance, stripped plastic gears inside the actuator, or a spindle seizing on the caliper guide pins.

Primary Causes of Ferrari Parking Brake Malfunctions

Modern exotics do not handle neglect well, nor do they tolerate minor electrical anomalies. The overwhelming majority of EPB failures trace back to one of five distinct issues:

                    ┌──────────────────────────────────────┐
│ COMMON FERRARI EPB FAILURES │

(70% of cases) (Spills/Wear) (Moisture) (CAN-Bus) (CCM Wear)

1. The Notorious Battery Voltage Drop (70% of All Reported Cases)

Ferrari supercars are notorious for parasitic battery drain. Between onboard telemetry, alarm modules, keyless entry sensors, and electronic suspension computers, a parked Ferrari consumes considerable amperage even when dormant.

The EPB servo motors require significant instantaneous current—often pulling upwards of 15 to 20 Amps per caliper during the final clamping sequence.

If your vehicle’s standing voltage drops below 12.1 Volts, the starter may still crank the engine over (since modern lithium-ion or AGM starter batteries maintain high cranking amps), but sensitive electronic control units will log low-voltage logic faults.
The moment the EPB module detects insufficient voltage to guarantee safe motorized clamping, it preemptively locks the system into an error state.

2. Center Console Switch Micro-Contact Degradation

Mounted between the driver and passenger seats, the electronic parking brake switch lever (the pull/push toggle) is directly in the splash zone for spilled drinks, detailing chemical overspray, and ambient dust accumulation.

Inside the switch housing are redundant micro-switches designed to verify user intent. If one micro-contact collects grime or suffers electrical oxidation, the module detects an "implausible signal" (one switch reads OPEN while the backup reads CLOSED). The car flags this as an internal switch failure to prevent spontaneous brake engagement at 150 mph.

3. Rear Caliper Servo Motor & Planetary Gearbox Seizure

The electric actuator bolted to each rear brake caliper consists of a DC electric motor driving a small planetary gearbox. This gearbox turns a swashplate or threaded spindle that presses the caliper piston against the carbon-ceramic brake disc.

Although sealed, these plastic motor housings endure severe operating environments:

Thermal Exposure: Carbon-ceramic rotors routinely reach temperatures in excess of 500°C (932°F) under spirited driving, baking the plastic motor casings, melting synthetic grease, and making the plastic shells brittle.
Moisture Intrusion: High-pressure car wash sprays and road grime penetrate hairline cracks in the heat-fatigued plastic. Moisture rusts the internal bearings and planetary gearsets, eventually seizing the motor solid.

4. Wheel Speed & Longitudinal G-Sensor Communication Drops

The AVH and EPB modules rely heavily on data provided by the ABS wheel speed sensors and internal tri-axial accelerometers:

If a rear ABS sensor gets caked with conductive metallic brake dust or the harness running along the lower wishbone chafes, the EPB module loses track of whether the vehicle is genuinely stopped.
Without verified zero-speed data, the computer will refuse to release or engage the parking brake automatically, triggering simultaneous ABS, Traction Control (CT Off / CST Off), and EPB dashboard alerts.

5. Brake Pad Bedding, Wear, and Spindle Over-Travel

Carbon-Ceramic Material (CCM) brake pads wear slowly, but as they thin, the internal electric spindle must travel farther to achieve the specified clamping load (measured in target motor resistance / milliamp spike).

If the caliper piston travels beyond a pre-programmed mechanical limit before reaching the required resistance threshold, the EPB controller logs an "Actuator Stroke Out of Range" fault. This frequently occurs after amateur brake pad changes where an electronic basic-setting calibration was omitted.

Ferrari Parking Brake Malfunction Reset: Diagnostic & Manual Procedures

If you find yourself stranded in your garage or at a filling station with a parking brake fault, work through these diagnostic and physical reset procedures sequentially.

       │ Step 1: In-Cabin Switch Calibration Cycle │
│ Step 2: Battery Hard Reset (Capacitive Discharge) │
│ Step 3: Diagnostic Scan Tool Adaptation / Calibration │
│ Step 4: Emergency Mechanical Release (Last Resort) │
       └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Method 1: The Cold Battery Hard Reset (Capacitive Discharge)

This clears soft logic locks and reboots all node gateways across the CAN network.

Park Safely: Ensure the vehicle is resting on a level surface. Secure the tires with wheel chocks so the car cannot roll if the brake releases.
Turn Off Electrical Consumers: Switch off lights, climate control, and audio systems. Turn the ignition off and remove the key (or position the key fob at least 15 feet away on keyless models).
Access the Battery: In most modern Ferraris (458, 488, F8, 812), the battery is housed behind an aluminum footplate in the passenger-side footwell.
Disconnect the Negative Quick-Release: Ferrari models are equipped with an emergency battery quick-release terminal (often marked with a red or black release lever). Unclip and isolate the ground terminal.
Wait 20–30 Minutes: This allows all internal micro-capacitors within the ECU, BCM, and EPB modules to bleed off their stored residual energy completely.
Re-establish Power: Firmly reconnect the battery terminal. Do not wiggle or intermittently spark the connection.
The "Re-Learn" Startup Ritual:
- Insert the key and turn the ignition to MAR (ON) without starting the engine.
- Wait a full 60 to 90 seconds. During this time, the climate flaps, throttle bodies, and EPB servos perform mechanical end-stop checks. Do not touch the throttle or brake pedal.
- Depress the primary footbrake firmly.
- Cycle the parking brake console switch DOWN (Release), then UP (Apply), then DOWN (Release).
- Start the engine. Check if the amber warning light clears.

Method 2: In-Cabin Switch Calibration Cycle

If the system logged a minor position mismatch, you can force the EPB module to re-zero its travel coordinates through the console switch:

Close the driver and passenger doors, the front trunk (frunk), and the engine lid completely (open sensors will suppress EPB commands).
Fasten the driver’s seatbelt into the buckle.
Turn the ignition to MAR / ON and start the engine.
Press and hold the primary footbrake pedal down with moderate-to-heavy pressure.
Push the EPB switch DOWN and hold your finger on it continuously for 10 to 12 seconds. You may hear the rear caliper servos click or hum faintly as they search for the zero-stop.
Pull the EPB switch UP and hold it continuously for 10 to 12 seconds.
Release the switch, wait 3 seconds, and tap the switch down normally. If the issue was purely positional, the system will recalibrate its mechanical limits and extinguish the light.

Method 3: Emergency Mechanical Caliper Release (Unsticking a Clamped Car)

If the motor has burned out, the planetary gears have seized, or the battery is completely dead, no electrical trick will free your Ferrari. You must mechanically back off the brake piston to avoid dragging the tires onto a flatbed.

   │ │
   └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Required Tools:

Factory tool kit jack or low-profile floor jack with Ferrari-specific jack-pad pucks.
Lug socket (often titanium; use a non-marring, plastic-sleeved socket).
T30 Torx bit or driver.
T40 or T45 Torx wrench / ratchet bit.

The Procedure:

Lift the vehicle on the affected corner using factory reinforced lifting points. Secure with a jack stand.
Remove the rear wheel carefully. Caution: Take extreme care not to bump the heavy wheel rim against the carbon-ceramic brake rotor; chipping the edge of a CCM rotor destroys it instantly.
Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector leading to the black plastic servo motor mounted on the back of the caliper.
Remove the two T30 Torx bolts that secure the plastic actuator to the metal caliper casing.
Wiggle and withdraw the actuator motor straight back. You will reveal the internal drive splines of the caliper's mechanical spindle.
Insert your T40 or T45 Torx bit directly into the exposed center spindle hole.
Turn the Torx bit CLOCKWISE (on most Brembo-derived Ferrari calipers). You will feel the tension release after 2–4 full turns. Continue winding until it stops with light resistance.
Grab the carbon-ceramic disc with gloved hands and rock it. It should now rotate freely on the wheel bearing hub.
You can now remount the wheel. The car can be gently rolled or winched onto a recovery vehicle without damaging the drivetrain.

Method 4: Diagnostic Scan Tool Calibration (DEIS, Leonardo, Autel MaxiSys)

When soft resets fail, an advanced diagnostic scan tool is required. Standard $40 OBD2 scanners cannot communicate with Ferrari’s proprietary CAN network protocols. You need a Ferrari DEIS, an Accinni Leonardo, a Texa IDC5, or an Autel MaxiSys Elite / MS908S Pro equipped with European supercar software.

Scan Tool Menu Path:

  - Error: U1705 (CAN Node Missing) - Dynamic Bedding / Calibration

Hook the vehicle up to an external regulated power supply (13.5V to 14.0V clean constant power).
Scan the EPB Module and ABS/ESP Module for specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
Clear historical codes, then navigate to "Special Functions" or "Actuator Adjustments."
Run "EPB Pad Replacement Mode / Caliper Open." The scan tool commands the motors to run backward until maximum open clearance is registered.
Command "EPB Close / End-Stop Adaptation." The motors will run forward, clamp onto the discs, register peak amperage draw, and back off precisely 0.5mm to establish the proper running air gap.
Clear all pending codes and perform a functional test cycle via the console switch.

Problem with My Ferrari 488 AVH System / Parking Brake: Deep-Dive Case Study

One of the most widely reported anomalies in exotic supercar forums centers around the Ferrari 488 GTB, Spider, and Pista Automatic Vehicle Hold (AVH) and Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) interactions.

The Symptom Profile

The owner starts a 488 GTB after a few weeks of inactivity. The vehicle starts without hesitation. However, after driving a few miles, stopping at a red light triggers a warning chime:

Visual Message: "AVH System Failure - Vehicle May Roll"
Warning Icon: Amber Handbrake symbol with a diagonal slash.
Driving Dynamic: The vehicle drops out of whatever Manettino mode it was in (e.g., Race or Sport) and defaults to a restricted safety mode. The transmission shifts harshly into first gear. When the vehicle is placed into Park (P) at the destination, the electronic parking brake will not engage via the console switch.

Technical Root Cause

On the Ferrari 488, the AVH system uses the primary hydraulic ABS pump block to hold brake fluid pressure on all four calipers during temporary stops (up to several minutes).

If the vehicle remains stationary past a specific threshold, or if the driver unbuckles the seatbelt or opens the door while stopped, the car executes an automated handover sequence:

It commands the rear electric EPB motors to clamp down.
Once current sensors confirm mechanical clamping, it releases the hydraulic fluid line pressure.

On the 488, if the auxiliary battery health is marginal (or the original OEM lead-acid/early lithium battery is degrading), an invisible voltage drop occurs when the cooling fans kick on at idle.

The EPB module briefly loses its precise position counters. Consequently, when the AVH system commands the parking brake handover, the EPB module rejects the command because it cannot verify the zero-position. The car views this as an immediate roll-away hazard and throws an AVH System Failure.

The Permanent Fix for the 488

Battery Upgrade: Replace the factory battery with a high-capacity AGM battery (e.g., Odyssey or Interstate) or a modern lightweight automotive lithium pack (like Antigravity) with higher Amp-hour reserves.
Firmware Flash: Ensure the dealership applies Ferrari Technical Service Bulletin updates regarding the EPB/BCM CAN-bus communication timeout thresholds.
Connector Inspection: Inspect the harness connectors clipped to the rear upper control arms. The 488's extreme turbocharger heat radiating from the catalytic converters can cook the plastic connector clips, allowing road salt and water vapor to oxidize the EPB harness terminal pins.

Ferrari 812 Superfast Parking Brake Issue: Expert Q&A Help

The Ferrari 812 Superfast (along with the F12berlinetta and GTC4Lusso) packs an immense front-mid-mounted 6.5L naturally aspirated V12. This layout concentrates extreme thermal loads under the floorboards, presenting unique challenges for the electronic braking hardware.

Here are direct, field-tested answers to the most urgent technical questions 812 Superfast owners ask.

       • Platform: Front-Mid V12 Architecture
       • Calipers: Brembo Extrema Integrated Motor-on-Caliper
       • Primary Issue: Dynamic Rear Steering (PCV) Interference
       • Critical Risk: Floorboard Heat-Soak near EPB Module
       ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Q1: "My 812 Superfast displays a Parking Brake Failure message alongside a 'Passo Corto Virtuale (PCV) / Rear Wheel Steering' error. Are these connected?"

Expert Answer: Yes, they are directly connected. The 812 Superfast features Ferrari’s Passo Corto Virtuale 2.0 (Virtual Short Wheelbase) active rear-wheel steering system.

The electromechanical rear steering actuators and the electronic parking brake actuators share high-speed chassis wiring corridors and cross-reference the same rear knuckle hub speed sensors.

If an alignment shop adjusts the rear toe-links without performing a sensor zero-point calibration, or if a wheel speed sensor harness is pinched during suspension movement, both the PCV system and the EPB system will fail simultaneously. Always scan the Chassis Management Gateway before assuming the parking brake calipers are broken.

Q2: "Can I leave my 812 Superfast parked in gear without the EPB engaged if the system keeps throwing errors?"

Expert Answer: Unlike traditional manual transmissions where leaving the car in 1st gear mechanically locks the rear wheels through the driveline, the 812 Superfast utilizes a 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT).

When the engine is off, the dual hydraulic clutches are completely disengaged (spring-loaded open). The transmission features an internal mechanical Park Pawl that engages when you select "P" or pull both paddles to neutral and turn off the engine.

While the Park Pawl will physically prevent the car from rolling on level ground, it is not designed to hold a 3,800-lb car on a steep incline alone. If your EPB is inoperative, you must chock the tires immediately. Do not rely solely on the DCT park lock.

Q3: "The parking brake on my 812 makes a loud, grinding metallic screech right before it throws a fault code. Did the carbon ceramic rotor crack?"

Expert Answer: It is very unlikely that the carbon-ceramic disc has cracked unless the car suffered a heavy mechanical impact or foreign object damage.

On the 812 Superfast, Ferrari utilizes the Brembo Extrema caliper system. The electronic actuator operates a tiny planetary gear system with plastic-nylon output gears designed as sacrificial weak points.

When the sliding pins on the caliper bracket dry out due to intense exhaust heat, the caliper resists sliding. The internal electric motor tries to force the piston forward, strips the teeth off the nylon reduction gears, and creates that characteristic loud, vibrating screech. The fix requires replacing the modular servo motor assembly, cleaning and re-greasing the slider pins with ceramic brake paste, and clearing the fault codes.

Use soft plastic trim wedges to pry up the carbon fiber center bridge trim on the console. Work slowly; replacement Ferrari carbon bridges can cost upwards of $4,000 if cracked.
Once the underside of the switchgear is accessible, release the multi-pin wiring harness connector.
Unscrew the small Torx retaining screws securing the EPB switch assembly to the carbon bridge.
Install the new OEM switch unit (ensure the rubber weather-seal gasket is seated properly).
Reconnect the harness, snap the carbon trim bridge back into its retention clips, reconnect the battery, and perform a basic settings cycle.

Protocol 2: Caliper Actuator Motor Replacement

Put the EPB system into "Service / Pad Change Mode" using your diagnostic tool to retract the internal spindle.
Safely raise the car and remove the rear wheel.
Clean the back of the caliper thoroughly with solvent-free brake cleaner to prevent dirt from entering the exposed hydraulic bore.
Remove the two T30 mounting screws. Pull the defective motor off.
Crucial Step: Thoroughly clean the caliper mounting face and install a brand-new rubber O-ring seal. Coat the O-ring lightly with high-temperature silicone grease. If this seal is reused or pinched, moisture will penetrate the new motor within months.
Align the motor output drive splines with the caliper spindle. Slide it flush against the caliper body. Never force the motor down with the mounting screws; if it doesn't sit flush, turn the spindle slightly by hand to align the splines.
Torque the T30 screws to 8 Nm (70 in-lbs). Do not over-torque, or you will crack the plastic mounting ears.
Plug in the electrical connector, mount the wheel, lower the vehicle, and execute the scan tool calibration process.

Ferrari Parking Brake Malfunction Cost Breakdown (DIY vs. Independent vs. Dealer)

Maintaining and repairing an exotic braking system varies wildly depending on whether you handle the repairs yourself with OEM suppliers or drop the car off at an authorized franchised dealership.

The table below outlines typical costs associated with diagnosing and repairing an EPB malfunction across models like the 458, 488, and 812.

Repair / Component	DIY Cost (Parts Only)	Independent Specialist	Authorized Ferrari Dealer
Comprehensive Diagnostic Scan & Reset	$0 – $150 (if scanner owned)	$200 – $400	$550 – $900
Battery Replacement (High-Performance AGM)	$220 – $350	$450 – $700	$1,200 – $2,200 (Ferrari Branded)
EPB Center Console Switch Assembly	$180 – $380	$450 – $750	$900 – $1,500
Rear EPB Actuator Motor (Single Side)	$350 – $750	$850 – $1,400	$2,200 – $3,500
Complete Rear Caliper Assembly (Integrated EPB)	$2,200 – $3,800	$3,500 – $5,200	$6,500 – $9,500+
Emergency Winch / Flatbed Recovery (Locked Wheels)	N/A	$300 – $600	$500 – $1,200

The Dealership "Complete Caliper Replacement" Trap

Many authorized Ferrari dealerships will not sell or replace the plastic electronic actuator motor as an individual component on cars like the 488 or 812.

Official workshop repair manuals often instruct technicians to replace the entire rear Brembo brake caliper assembly if an internal actuator motor or gear set fails.

This policy transforms a straightforward $500 motor swap into an astronomical $7,000+ repair bill requiring fluid line disconnects, hydraulic bleeding, and full CCM system recalibration.

Independent exotic specialists will happily source and replace just the Brembo/Ferrari actuator motor unit, saving thousands of dollars while yielding identical mechanical results.

Preventative Maintenance: Keeping Your Ferrari EPB Trouble-Free

Avoiding unexpected parking brake failures boils down to adhering to three fundamental operating habits:

                      PREVENTATIVE CHECKLIST
  ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ [x] Keep vehicle permanently hooked to an intelligent maintainer │
│ [x] Exercise the EPB motors weekly to spread internal grease │
│ [x] Blow out brake dust from rear caliper linkages after washes │
  │ [x] Never engage EPB on glowing-hot carbon-ceramic discs │
  └──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Use the Battery Maintainer Religiously: Whenever your Ferrari is parked in the garage, plug in the factory magnetic battery tender. Keeping standing voltage above 12.6 Volts eliminates 70% of all electronic glitches, CAN communication timeouts, and AVH warning flags.
Exercise the Caliper Servos Regularly: Many owners store their cars for months without cycling the brakes. The internal mechanical spindles sit dry, and condensation binds the metal threads. Make a habit of toggling the console switch every couple of weeks while the engine is running to distribute internal lubricant.
Avoid Clamping Scorching-Hot CCM Rotors: If you have just completed an aggressive canyon run or a track-day session, do not engage the parking brake immediately. Carbon-ceramic rotors retain intense thermal energy. Clamping the pads hard against a 600°C rotor will bake the caliper seals, heat-soak the actuator motor gears, and transfer pad material unevenly onto the ceramic disc surface, leading to low-speed vibrations. Allow a 10-minute cool-down drive before parking.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I drive my Ferrari with the amber "Parking Brake Malfunction" light on?

If the warning light is amber and you can confirm that the rear wheels are rolling freely without drag, resistance, or burning odors, the vehicle is generally safe to drive to a workshop.

However, advanced stability features—such as Automatic Vehicle Hold (AVH), Hill Start Assist, and certain Manettino dynamic settings (such as CT Off or ESC Off)—will likely be disabled. If the light is flashing red or an audible chime continues to ring, do not drive the car. The pads could be lightly dragging, which will quickly destroy the multi-thousand-dollar carbon-ceramic rotors with excessive heat.

How do I know if my Ferrari parking brake issue is just a dying battery?

Check your vehicle's standing voltage with a digital multimeter across the battery terminals. If the voltage is under 12.2 Volts with the engine off, the battery is suspect.

Furthermore, if the EPB or AVH warning appears simultaneously with unrelated warnings (e.g., "Manettino Failure," "Suspension Control Failure," or "Catalytic Converter Temp High"), you are dealing with system-wide low voltage, not a mechanical brake fault.

Can I push the rear caliper pistons back manually with a C-clamp during a brake pad job?

Under no circumstances should you force the rear caliper pistons back with a mechanical clamp or channel locks.

On integrated EPB calipers, the piston is locked by the internal motorized drive screw. Forcing the piston back without electronically retracting the spindle via a diagnostic scan tool (or mechanically unwinding it from the rear using a Torx driver) will strip the internal planetary gearbox and crack the internal caliper piston casting, requiring complete caliper replacement.

Why does my Ferrari smell like burning plastic near the rear wheels after driving?

A burning plastic or hot electrical odor coming from the rear wheel arches usually points to one of two things:

The EPB actuator motor did not fully retract, causing the brake pads to lightly drag against the carbon-ceramic rotor, generating immense thermal energy.
Hairline cracks in the plastic actuator motor housing have allowed moisture in, causing the internal motor windings to short-circuit and melt their insulation.

Jack the vehicle up immediately and check for free wheel rotation.

Does the Ferrari 458 Italia have the same EPB setup as the 488 GTB?

No. Most Ferrari 458 models use a dual-caliper system at the rear axle: a massive Brembo hydraulic caliper for standard braking and a separate, smaller motorized black spot-caliper dedicated exclusively to the parking brake.

The 488 GTB transitioned to an integrated motor-on-caliper design, where a single, oversized rear caliper handles both hydraulic foot-braking and electromechanical parking brake clamping. The 488 setup requires specialized electronic scan tool retraction routines during brake service, whereas the 458 spot calipers can often be serviced more modularly.
