McLaren Common Fault Codes Explained: Symptoms, Causes & How to Fix Them

McLaren builds mid-engined supercars and hypercars engineered to a Formula 1-influenced standard — the M838T and M840T twin-turbo V8 engines, carbon-fibre MonoCell chassis, and electronics systems calibrated for track-level performance. When a warning or fault code appears, understanding it accurately matters: McLarens are specialist vehicles with limited diagnostic tooling in the mainstream, and guesswork is expensive. This guide covers the McLaren fault codes and warning conditions we are asked about most at EuroParts360: what each means, the symptoms, the causes, how to diagnose them, and the genuine OEM parts that address them.

Whether you drive a 570S, 600LT, 720S, 765LT, GT, Artura, or a 12C, the same clusters of conditions appear — and knowing them helps you work efficiently with your specialist to resolve them.

How McLaren Fault Codes Work

McLaren vehicles report standard OBD-II “P” codes readable by any capable scanner, but the meaningful detail for McLaren-specific systems lives behind the factory McLaren IRIS diagnostic system. IRIS is what McLaren dealers and authorized service centers use to read manufacturer-specific codes, actuate components, view live data, and run guided diagnostics across the engine, transmission, hydraulic system, and chassis modules.

Unlike the VW Group or BMW, McLaren does not have a widely available enthusiast diagnostic tool — VCDS or ISTA do not work on a 720S. Icarsoft and Autel cover basic OBD-II engine codes, but anything beyond that requires IRIS or a McLaren specialist. This makes accurate identification of the fundamental fault even more important before committing to a repair. For the framework behind the OBD-II codes, the standard is documented on Wikipedia, and model-specific resources are available through McLaren’s official site.

Here are the conditions worth knowing.

Code P0299 — Turbocharger Underboost (M838T / M840T)

What it means: The twin-turbo M838T or M840T V8 is not reaching the commanded boost pressure. This is the single most reported performance code on McLarens — every model uses a twin-turbo V8, so this code affects the full range.

Symptoms:

Noticeable power loss under hard acceleration, especially mid-range
The car may enter a reduced-power mode
Hissing or rushing air sounds from a boost leak

Common causes:

Boost leaks — cracked charge pipes, split hoses, or intercooler connections. The most common cause, and often triggered by heat cycling.
Failed bypass/diverter valve.
Wastegate actuator fault.
Failed boost pressure sensor.

How to diagnose: A pressure/smoke test of the intake and boost system finds leaks. Live data comparing requested vs. actual boost shows whether the turbo is trying and failing (mechanical) or being mis-commanded (sensor/control). Inspect charge pipes and intercooler connections first — the mid-engine layout means tight packaging and heat exposure that stresses these components.

The fix: Repair leaks, replace a failed bypass valve, or address the wastegate/turbo. Boost components are in our McLaren parts collection and engine parts range.

Code P0300 / P0301–P0308 — Cylinder Misfire

What it means: Random or cylinder-specific misfires on the twin-turbo V8. A misfire in a McLaren is felt immediately — these engines are calibrated to deliver power with exceptional linearity, and a misfiring cylinder interrupts that character noticeably.

Symptoms:

A lumpy, uneven idle or power delivery
Flashing check-engine light during active misfires
Reduced power and fuel economy

Common causes:

Worn ignition coils and spark plugs — the most common cause.
Failing fuel injectors.
Boost or vacuum leaks causing a lean misfire.
Carbon buildup on direct-injection valves at higher mileages.

How to diagnose: Read which cylinders are misfiring. Swapping a coil to another cylinder and seeing whether the misfire follows isolates ignition faults. Confirm fuel delivery and check for boost or vacuum leaks.

The fix: Replace genuine coils and plugs — the fix for most misfires. On a V8 in a mid-engine car, access is labor-intensive, so replacing the full set once is the efficient approach. Ignition components are in our car electrical parts collection and engine parts range.

Code P0087 — Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low

What it means: The fuel rail is not maintaining adequate pressure for the direct-injection system. The M838T/M840T’s high-pressure fuel delivery is a precision system, and this code indicates it is not meeting commanded pressure.

Symptoms:

Hesitation, stumbling, and power loss
Rough idle and misfires
Hard starting in some cases

Common causes:

Failing high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) — the most common cause.
Fuel pressure regulator fault.
Clogged fuel injectors.
Low-pressure fuel supply issue (pump or filter).

How to diagnose: Live data shows fuel rail pressure vs. commanded. Confirming the low-pressure supply is adequate before condemning the HPFP eliminates a simpler cause. HPFP failure is a documented concern on some M838T variants at higher mileages.

The fix: Replace the high-pressure fuel pump or address the fuel supply issue. Fuel-system components are in our engine parts collection.

Code P0420 / P0430 — Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold

What it means: The catalytic converter on bank 1 or bank 2 is underperforming. McLaren’s high-performance exhaust systems operate at extreme temperatures that stress converters over time.

Symptoms:

Check-engine light, typically without drivability change
Possibly slightly reduced economy or a faint smell
May fail an emissions test

Common causes:

Failing oxygen sensor — often the real cause, and far cheaper than a converter.
Aging catalytic converter.
Exhaust leaks skewing sensor readings.
Underlying misfire that degraded the converter.

How to diagnose: Rule out oxygen sensors and exhaust leaks first. Compare upstream and downstream O2 sensor activity in live data. Confirm there is no misfire damaging the converter.

The fix: Replace the failing oxygen sensor, or the converter if genuinely spent, and repair exhaust leaks. Sensors are in our car electrical parts collection.

Hydraulic System Faults (RHC / Folding Hard Top)

What it means: McLarens use a hydraulic system for functions including the folding hard top (Spider models), active dampers (Proactive Chassis Control), and the Electrohydraulic rear wing (on some variants). Hydraulic system warnings indicate pressure, fluid, or actuator issues.

Symptoms:

Hydraulic system warning message
Folding roof operating slowly or incompletely
Active damper or suspension warnings
Fluid level low indicator

Common causes:

Low hydraulic fluid — the most common and most easily addressed cause.
Hydraulic pump wear on higher-mileage cars.
Actuator seals or solenoid faults.

How to diagnose: Check hydraulic fluid level first — this resolves many warnings. IRIS diagnostics identify which actuator or circuit is at fault.

The fix: Top up or replace hydraulic fluid, or address the specific component with genuine OEM parts. Hydraulic and suspension components are in our axle & steering / suspension range.

Generic Codes That Still Apply to McLaren

P0171 / P0174 — System Too Lean. Vacuum or boost leaks, a dirty MAF, or crankcase ventilation faults. A smoke test finds the leak. Parts are in our engine parts collection.

P0011 / P0021 — Camshaft Timing Over-Advanced. Variable valve timing solenoid or oil-related fault. Parts are in our engine parts collection.

Preventing McLaren Fault Codes: Maintenance That Pays Off

McLaren codes cluster around boost-system health, ignition wear, fuel-system condition, and hydraulic maintenance:

Follow McLaren’s service schedule with genuine fluids. The M838T/M840T is a high-stress engine and depends on correct oil specification and timely changes.
Inspect charge pipes and intercooler connections proactively — the mid-engine layout and heat cycling make these a regular source of P0299.
Replace ignition coils and plugs before they fail — given the access labor on a mid-engine car, replacing the full set once is the sensible approach.
Monitor hydraulic fluid level at each service to avoid costly actuator wear from low fluid.

How to Read McLaren Fault Codes

McLaren diagnostics are more specialist-dependent than most marques:

Generic OBD-II scan tools read emissions and engine P-codes (misfire, lean, catalyst, boost, fuel pressure) covered above.
McLaren IRIS — the factory system — is needed for manufacturer-specific codes, chassis and body modules, hydraulic system diagnostics, and component actuations. Available at McLaren dealers and authorized service centers.
No widely available enthusiast tool exists for McLaren-specific codes the way VCDS serves VW Group or ISTA serves BMW. This makes reading and recording the OBD-II codes carefully, noting symptoms precisely, and working with a specialist the effective approach.

Plug into the OBD-II port (under the dash, driver’s side on most models), run a scan, and record every stored code with its freeze-frame data. Note the conditions the code set under — cold vs. warm, idle vs. load, track vs. road — which is especially useful for a car driven in both environments.

Remember: clearing a code is not a repair. It erases the record and the freeze-frame data but fixes nothing; the fault returns once re-detected. Clear only after repairs are complete.

Understanding Live Data on a McLaren

Live data is the best tool available for the codes readable with mainstream scanners. For boost codes (P0299), requested vs. actual boost at different throttle positions and temperatures shows whether the turbo is failing mechanically or the system is being mis-commanded. For fuel codes (P0087), fuel rail pressure vs. target confirms whether the HPFP is supplying correctly. For lean codes (P0171/P0174), fuel trims — short-term reacting to the oxygen sensors, long-term the learned average, near 0% being healthy — point to air and boost leaks when high-positive. For catalyst codes, upstream and downstream O2 sensor traces distinguish a failing sensor from a spent converter. Reading this data precisely before committing to a repair is especially valuable on a McLaren, where the specialist labor cost makes accuracy the biggest money-saver available.

Quick Reference: McLaren Fault Codes at a Glance

Code / Fault	Meaning	Most Likely Fix
P0299	Turbo underboost	Fix boost/charge-pipe leak; check bypass valve
P0300	Cylinder misfire	Replace coils and plugs; check injectors
P0087	Fuel rail pressure low	Replace HPFP; check fuel supply
P0420 / P0430	Catalyst efficiency low	Replace O2 sensor; check exhaust leaks
Hydraulic warning	RHC fluid/pump/actuator	Check fluid; specialist IRIS diagnosis
P0171 / P0174	System too lean	Fix boost/vacuum leak; check MAF

Use this as a starting point — always confirm with a scan and where necessary with IRIS before ordering parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep driving my McLaren with the check-engine light on?
A steady light for a minor fault allows careful driving to a specialist. A flashing light means an active misfire — reduce load and diagnose immediately. Any code with limp-mode, overheating, a hydraulic system warning, or a fuel pressure fault means stop and diagnose before further driving.

Why does my code return after I clear it?
Because clearing only erases the record. The system re-detects the fault and re-sets it. Repairing the root cause is the only permanent fix.

Is there any alternative to the McLaren IRIS system?
For OBD-II engine and emissions codes, mainstream scan tools work well. For McLaren-specific module codes (transmission, hydraulic, chassis), IRIS or a McLaren dealer/authorized specialist is currently the only reliable option. This is a practical reality of owning a specialist marque.

Do I need genuine McLaren parts?
For sensors, ignition components, fuel-system parts, and boost components, genuine or OEM-grade parts are strongly recommended. Budget alternatives are a common source of repeat failures, and on a McLaren the specialist labor to refit makes a second repair disproportionately expensive. EuroParts360 focuses on genuine and OEM-standard parts.

What makes the M838T/M840T HPFP a particular concern?
The high-pressure fuel pump on some M838T variants is a documented higher-mileage wear item. A P0087 code combined with hesitation and hard starting on a higher-mileage 12C, 650S, or early 570S is worth investigating at the pump before other fuel-system components.

Can one fault set multiple codes?
Yes. A boost or vacuum leak can trigger underboost, lean, and misfire codes together. A fuel pressure issue can trigger lean and misfire codes. Diagnose the most fundamental fault first.

A Step-by-Step Diagnostic Workflow

When a warning appears on your McLaren, precision is the priority:

Read the OBD-II codes and record everything with freeze-frame data. Note every stored and pending code, the conditions when each set, and the live data available — this is what a specialist will need.
Identify the most fundamental fault. A boost leak or fuel pressure issue often drives downstream lean and misfire codes. Fix the foundation first.
Use live data to confirm. Boost values, fuel trims, fuel pressure, O2 sensor traces, and timing data distinguish a component that is truly failing from one reporting a downstream symptom.
Check the most common causes first. Charge pipes and boost connections, coils and plugs, and fuel supply account for the majority of McLaren codes — address these before moving to more expensive components.
For anything beyond OBD-II codes, engage a McLaren specialist with IRIS. Hydraulic, chassis, and transmission faults require IRIS-level access. The cost of specialist diagnosis is small compared to the cost of replacing the wrong component.
Repair, then clear, then road-test. Clear the code only after the repair, then drive a full cycle to confirm it stays gone.

Following this order consistently is the difference between a controlled, efficient repair and an expensive series of guesses on a car where every wrong turn is costly.

Genuine vs OEM vs Aftermarket: What to Choose

For McLaren, the grade decision is clear: use genuine or OEM-grade for anything electronic, precision-critical, or in the boost and fuel systems — sensors, ignition coils, bypass valves, and fuel pumps. Budget alternatives in these categories are the most common reason a repair fails and the code returns, and on a McLaren the specialist labor to redo a job outweighs any part-cost saving by a large margin. Aftermarket is acceptable for basic consumables where the specification is simple and well-established.

At EuroParts360 we stock genuine and OEM-standard parts. If you are unsure which grade suits a specific repair, send us the code and your VIN and we will advise honestly — the goal is a repair that lasts and keeps the car performing as McLaren intended.
