Range Rover Air Suspension Failure: Why It Sags & How to Fix It

Range Rover air suspension failure is most often caused by a leaking air strut, a worn compressor, or a faulty ride-height sensor - and it typically shows up as the vehicle sitting low, sagging on one corner, or refusing to lift. If your Range Rover displays "Suspension Fault," "Vehicle Too Low," or drops overnight, one of those components has worn out. Air suspension is the single most common source of trouble on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models, but every failure point is a replaceable part.

This guide walks through why the system fails, how to read the symptoms, and the genuine OEM parts that restore the ride. Know what you need already? Browse our genuine Land Rover and Range Rover parts catalogue or jump to the OEM parts table.

How Range Rover air suspension works - and why it fails

Every full-size Range Rover, and the Range Rover Sport, rides on electronic air suspension rather than steel springs. Rubber air springs at each corner are inflated by an onboard compressor and continuously adjusted by height sensors and a control module. The system delivers the smooth, adaptive ride the Range Rover is famous for, raises the vehicle for off-road clearance, and lowers it for easy entry and highway stability.

The trade-off is complexity and wear. Owners consistently report the same failures: air springs that leak, compressors that wear out, and height sensors that send bad data. The rubber air springs age and crack, the compressor - which has to work harder every time a spring starts to leak - eventually burns out, and the electronic dampers and sensors that manage ride behaviour degrade over time. Like every air system, the failures cascade: an unrepaired leak drives the compressor to run constantly until it dies, turning a one-part repair into two.

The most common Range Rover air suspension problems

1. Leaking air struts / air springs

The headline failure. The rubber air spring develops cracks or pinhole leaks as it ages, and the vehicle can no longer hold its ride height. You'll see the Range Rover sitting low or leaning to one corner - most obviously after it has been parked overnight - and you may hear a hiss as air escapes. A leaking spring also forces the compressor into overtime, so fixing it quickly protects the rest of the system.

2. Air compressor failure

The compressor is the workhorse that keeps every corner inflated, and it is one of the most common Range Rover failures. It wears out on its own over time, and it dies early when forced to chase an unrepaired leak. Symptoms include the vehicle taking a long time to rise, refusing to lift at all, or the compressor audibly running far more than normal. Because the compressor is expensive, diagnosing and fixing leaks before they overwork it is the smartest maintenance a Range Rover owner can do. 3. Ride-height sensor faults

Height sensors tell the vehicle how high each corner is sitting so the suspension can adjust correctly. When a sensor fails, the vehicle may sit unevenly, adjust unpredictably while driving, or throw a suspension fault even when the springs and compressor are healthy. Sensor faults are frequently misdiagnosed as strut leaks, which is why reading fault codes before replacing parts saves money.

4. Electronic damper problems

On models with adaptive dampers, the electronically controlled dampers adjust stiffness to road conditions and driving style. When they fail, ride quality suffers noticeably. It's worth checking damper condition on any used Range Rover Sport before purchase, as replacement is a meaningful cost.

5. Valve block and air line leaks

The valve block distributes air to each corner, and its seals dry out and leak. The air lines running to each strut become brittle and crack. Both mimic a failing spring, so a full pressure test is essential to find the true source rather than replacing the wrong part.

Warning signs your Range Rover air suspension is failing

The vehicle sits low or sags on one corner, especially after sitting overnight.
"Suspension Fault" or "Vehicle Too Low" message on the dash.
A hissing sound from a wheel arch.
The vehicle won't rise to normal or off-road height, or takes a long time to lift.
An uneven or unusually harsh ride as the system loses the ability to hold pressure.
The compressor runs constantly or cycles far more than usual.

Any of these means diagnose now, before a simple leak cascades into compressor failure. A Range Rover that has dropped fully onto its bump stops should not be driven hard - the ride is compromised and the tyres can contact bodywork.

Don't forget wheel bearings and hubs

Air suspension gets the headlines, but wheel bearings and hubs are one of the most frequently reported wear items on Land Rover and Range Rover models - the LR3/Discovery platform in particular sees very high wheel-bearing replacement rates. A worn wheel bearing produces a droning or grinding noise that rises with speed and changes when you turn. If you're already having suspension work done, it's efficient to inspect the hubs at the same time. Browse genuine Land Rover wheel bearings and hubs here.

Genuine OEM Range Rover air suspension parts

The table maps each symptom to the component that fixes it. Range Rover air suspension hardware varies significantly by generation (L322, L405, L494 Sport and others) and model year, so always confirm fitment against your VIN before ordering.

Symptom	Failed component	Genuine OEM fix
Sags overnight, hissing corner	Air strut / air spring	Front or rear air suspension strut
Slow to rise, won't lift	Air compressor	Air suspension compressor + dryer
Uneven ride height	Ride-height sensor	Height / level sensor
Poor ride on adaptive models	Electronic damper	Adaptive damper unit
Multiple corners leak down	Valve block / air lines	Valve block, air line set
Droning noise with speed	Wheel bearing / hub	Wheel bearing / hub assembly

VIN disclaimer: fitment must be verified against your vehicle's VIN. Generation, chassis and model year change the correct part number. See the full range in our Land Rover / Range Rover collection and air suspension collection.

Range Rover air suspension in the GCC: built for dunes, punished by heat

The Range Rover is one of the most popular luxury SUVs across the UAE and wider Gulf - and Gulf conditions are exactly what accelerate air suspension failure. Sustained extreme heat degrades the rubber air springs faster than in temperate climates, so the cracking and leaking that ages a European car might reach a Gulf car noticeably sooner. Desert and off-road use adds fine dust and constant height adjustment, both of which work the compressor and valve block harder.

The compressor is the component that suffers most. Already forced to run more often to cover heat-aged leaks, and doing so in a superheated engine bay, it has little thermal margin - which is why compressor failure is such a common Range Rover repair regionally. The practical advice for Gulf owners: address any sag or hiss immediately, fit genuine OEM air springs rather than cheap aftermarket rubber that degrades even faster in the heat, and keep the system's air dryer healthy so moisture doesn't corrode the compressor from the inside. How to diagnose Range Rover air suspension at home

Before booking a workshop, you can localise a Range Rover air suspension fault with a few simple checks. Begin with the overnight test: park on level ground, note the height at each corner, and check again in the morning. A single corner that has dropped points to a leaking air spring on that side; an evenly settled vehicle suggests a valve block issue or a system-wide leak. This one observation often tells you whether you're looking at one strut or something shared.

Next, use your ears and a spray bottle. With the vehicle quiet, listen at each wheel arch for the hiss of escaping air, then spray soapy water on the air spring, its fittings and the air lines - a leak will bubble at the exact point of failure. Start the vehicle and observe the lift: a healthy system raises the Range Rover promptly and the compressor cycles briefly, while a long or constant compressor run signals it's chasing a leak, and no compressor activity at all points toward the relay, fuse or compressor itself.

Finally, read the fault codes. Range Rover air suspension stores diagnostic codes that distinguish a height-sensor fault from a genuine leak - a crucial distinction, because a sensor is a modest part while a strut is a major one. Many owners also ask about resetting the suspension after a fault: a reset may clear a transient message, but if a component has genuinely failed the fault will simply return. A reset is not a repair - it's a way to confirm whether the fault is persistent. Always diagnose the underlying cause rather than repeatedly clearing the warning.

Genuine OEM vs aftermarket air suspension parts

Range Rover air suspension is a case where part quality directly determines how long your repair lasts. The air spring's rubber is the working component, and cheaper aftermarket springs often use lower-grade rubber that hardens and cracks far sooner - a real risk in hot climates where a bargain strut can fail again within a couple of years. Genuine OEM and premium air springs are built to the original material and pressure specification, so the vehicle holds height correctly and the repair lasts.

The compressor is the same story. A genuine compressor with a functioning air dryer keeps moisture out of the system; a cheap compressor can push moisture into the struts and valve block, seeding the next round of failures. Given how expensive the compressor is and how central it is to the whole system, fitting a quality unit once is far cheaper than replacing a failed budget unit and the damage it causes. For a system this integral to the vehicle, we supply genuine OEM air suspension components rather than the budget rubber that degrades quickly in Gulf conditions.

What affects Range Rover air suspension repair cost

Two air suspension repairs on the same Range Rover can differ substantially in cost, and the reason is almost always how far the fault was allowed to progress. A single air spring caught early is the baseline. Leave that leak unaddressed and the overworked compressor fails too, adding significantly to the bill. A height sensor is a moderate cost; a valve block or a set of adaptive dampers is more. The worst case is the cascade - a leak that killed the compressor, flattened the battery and left the vehicle on its bump stops.

As with any air system, cost is largely within the owner's control. Diagnose properly so you replace the part that actually failed, fix leaks while they're small so they never reach the compressor, and fit genuine components so you don't repeat the job. Owners who monitor ride height and act on the first sag or hiss consistently spend less than those who top up the system and wait for the warning light.

Which Range Rover models and generations are affected?

Air suspension is fitted across the full-size Range Rover and Range Rover Sport ranges, so the failure points described here apply broadly - but the specific hardware, and some of the common failure patterns, vary by generation. Older platforms such as the L322 Range Rover and the related Land Rover Discovery / LR3 and LR4 are now well into the age and mileage where air springs, compressors and height sensors routinely need replacement; the Discovery/LR3 platform in particular is known for very high wheel-bearing and air-suspension wear rates. If you run one of these, treat air suspension components as maintenance items rather than unexpected failures.

Newer platforms - the L405 Range Rover, the L494 Range Rover Sport and their successors - carry more sophisticated air suspension with adaptive damping, which adds the electronic dampers and more complex control hardware to the list of things that can fail. The core physics are unchanged: rubber air springs age and leak, compressors wear out and are killed early by unrepaired leaks, and height sensors send bad data. But the parts are more model-specific and more tightly integrated, which makes correct identification even more important.

Across every generation, the practical advice is the same. Identify your vehicle precisely, diagnose the actual failed component before buying parts, and fit genuine OEM hardware suited to your generation and model year. Because Range Rover air suspension hardware changes significantly between platforms, a part that fits an L322 will not fit an L405, and even within a generation, options and build dates can change the correct component - which is why VIN verification is essential before ordering.
