Is this the forward or rearward lower control arm?
This is the Forward Lower Control Arm (Tension Strut), which curves diagonally toward the front bumper of the car. The E60 also utilizes a rearward, straight lower control arm (often called the wishbone or lateral link). The heavy, fluid-filled bushing in this forward tension strut is the most common failure point on the entire E60 front suspension.
Does this fit xDrive (AWD) models?
No. The front suspension and subframe geometry on BMW's xDrive models is completely different to accommodate the front drive axles. This specific control arm (31126774826) is engineered strictly for Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) E60 and E61 5 Series models.
Do I need to get an alignment after installing this?
Yes. Because you are replacing a primary suspension link that heavily influences your wheel's caster and toe alignment, a professional four-wheel alignment is strictly required after installation. Skipping the alignment will result in wandering steering and rapid, uneven tire wear.
Can I tighten the mounting bolts while the car is raised on the lift?
Absolutely not. This is the number one cause of premature, catastrophic bushing failure. The bolt passing through the rubber hydro-bushing must only be torqued when the vehicle's suspension is fully "loaded" (resting on the ground at normal ride height). If you tighten the bolt while the wheel is dangling freely in the air, the rubber bushing will permanently twist and tear the moment you lower the car's weight onto the tires.
