Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between this genuine BMW part and aftermarket alternatives?
This is a 100% genuine BMW factory original part, manufactured to the exact specifications BMW engineers designed for your X5. Key differences from aftermarket: (1) Materials—BMW uses proprietary steel alloys and rubber compounds tested for F15 chassis specifically, (2) Quality control—Every genuine part passes BMW's rigorous testing standards, (3) Warranty—Backed by BMW factory warranty when installed at authorized dealers, (4) Fit & finish—Guaranteed perfect fit with no modifications, (5) Longevity—Engineered for 100,000+ mile service life under normal conditions, (6) Resale value—Documented use of genuine parts maintains vehicle value. Price consideration: Genuine BMW parts cost 40-100% more than aftermarket but offer peace of mind, warranty protection, and proven BMW reliability. Many owners choose genuine BMW for critical suspension components where safety and performance are paramount.
Does this control arm fit both regular X5 (F15) and X5 M (F85) models?
YES—this genuine control arm fits both F15 standard X5 AND F85 X5 M models from 2014-2018. BMW engineered this component to work across the entire F15/F85 platform, including the high-performance X5 M variant. However, there's an important caveat: this part is for vehicles WITHOUT Electronic Drive Dynamics Control. Some X5 M and high-performance models may have electronic drive dynamics control, which requires a different control arm specification. Before ordering: (1) Check your build sheet or iDrive vehicle settings for "Electronic Drive Dynamics Control" or "Adaptive M Suspension", (2) If equipped, you may need a different part number, (3) Consult your BMW dealer with VIN to confirm exact part needed. For most standard X5 and many X5 M models without these systems, this genuine part is correct.
Will I need a wheel alignment after installing this genuine BMW control arm?
YES—professional 4-wheel alignment is ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED after replacing any control arm, even genuine BMW parts. This is non-negotiable BMW service protocol. Control arms are critical suspension geometry components, and replacing them alters wheel angles including camber, caster, and toe. Without proper alignment: (1) Tires will wear rapidly and unevenly (potentially destroying $800+ tire set in 5,000 miles), (2) Handling will be compromised and unpredictable, (3) Vehicle may pull to one side, (4) Fuel efficiency decreases, (5) Safety is compromised during emergency maneuvers. BMW recommendation: Have alignment performed at BMW-certified facility using BMW alignment specifications for F15/F85 chassis. Budget $150-250 for alignment. This is mandatory maintenance, not optional—factor it into your total repair cost.
Can I replace just the left control arm or should I do both sides with genuine BMW parts?
With genuine BMW parts, you have more flexibility than aftermarket due to proven longevity. Replace left only if: (1) Only the left side is damaged or failed, (2) Vehicle mileage is under 80,000 miles, (3) Right side shows no symptoms during inspection, (4) Recent inspection confirmed right side condition is good. Replace both left and right if: (1) Vehicle has 80,000+ miles (bushings age at similar rates), (2) One side failed—the other is likely close to failure, (3) You want to avoid second alignment fee later ($150-250 savings), (4) Ensuring perfectly balanced suspension performance, (5) Want synchronized replacement intervals going forward. BMW dealer practice: Many BMW technicians recommend replacing both sides on high-mileage vehicles (100,000+ miles) to prevent "come-back" within 6-12 months when the second side fails. Cost consideration: Replacing both genuine control arms plus one alignment ($400-600 labor + parts) is more economical than two separate services 6 months apart. However, at lower mileage with only one failed arm, replacing just the affected side with genuine BMW is acceptable.
