Mercedes-Benz Common Fault Codes Explained: Symptoms, Causes & Fixes

A check-engine light in a Mercedes-Benz rarely means "something minor." Mercedes builds complex, tightly integrated engines — the M272, M273, M278, and the diesel OM642 among them — and when a fault code appears, it usually points to a specific system that needs attention before it cascades into a bigger repair. This guide covers the Mercedes fault codes we are asked about most at EuroParts360, what they mean, how to diagnose them, and the genuine OEM parts that fix them.

From the C-Class and E-Class to the S-Class, GLE, and G-Wagon, the same handful of codes appear again and again. Knowing them helps you order the right part, avoid unnecessary dealer labor, and keep your Mercedes running the way it was engineered to.

How Mercedes-Benz Fault Codes Work

Mercedes vehicles report both generic OBD-II codes (the "P" codes shared across all manufacturers) and Mercedes-specific codes read through the factory Xentry/DAS system or a capable aftermarket scanner. The generic codes get you into the right neighborhood; the Mercedes-specific codes give you the street address.

A basic code reader will show a P-code, but Mercedes systems — especially the balance-shaft/idler-gear issues on early M272/M273 engines, or the intake manifold faults on the M278 V8 — often need a Mercedes-aware scan tool to pinpoint the exact component. For the emissions and diagnostic standard underpinning all of this, the OBD-II overview on Wikipedia is a good primer, and Mercedes-Benz's official site hosts owner and technical resources.

Here are the codes worth knowing.

Code P2004 — Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open

What it means: Many Mercedes engines use variable-length or swirl-flap intake manifolds to optimize airflow at different RPMs. P2004 means the runner/flap on bank 1 is stuck open, so the ECU can no longer control intake tumble.

Symptoms:

Rough idle and reduced low-end torque
Hesitation off the line
Slightly elevated fuel consumption
Sometimes a whistling intake noise

Common causes:

Broken or seized intake manifold flaps/actuator — the plastic flaps and their linkage wear and snap over time. This is the dominant cause.
Failed intake manifold actuator motor.
Carbon buildup binding the flaps (common on direct-injection engines).
Wiring or connector faults to the actuator.

How to diagnose: Inspect the actuator arm movement with the engine off. On many Mercedes V6/V8 engines the entire intake manifold assembly is a known wear item, and a broken flap is often visible on inspection. Live data will show the commanded vs. actual flap position.

The fix: Replace the intake manifold or the flap/actuator assembly with a genuine OEM unit, and clean carbon deposits if present. Intake manifolds and related components are available in our Mercedes-Benz parts collection and genuine OEM engine parts range.

Code P0170 / P0173 — Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1 / Bank 2)

What it means: The ECU's fuel corrections have drifted outside the acceptable range. The engine is running too rich or too lean and the computer can no longer bring the mixture back to target.

Symptoms:

Rough idle, hesitation, and reduced power
Poor fuel economy
Occasional stalling
Sometimes a faint fuel smell (if running rich)

Common causes:

Unmetered air/vacuum leaks — cracked intake ducts, failed crankcase ventilation, or leaking manifold gaskets.
Failing mass air flow (MAF) sensor — a very common Mercedes cause.
Fuel delivery problems — weak fuel pump, clogged injectors, or a failing fuel pressure regulator.
Dirty or failing oxygen sensors.

How to diagnose: Read live fuel trims. Consistently high positive trims indicate a lean condition (chase air leaks and the MAF); high negative trims indicate rich running (look at fuel pressure and injectors). A smoke test finds vacuum leaks fast.

The fix: Repair the leak, replace a failed MAF or O2 sensor, or address fuel delivery. Sensors and ventilation components are in our car electrical parts collection and engine parts collection.

Code P0410 — Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

What it means: The secondary air injection (SAI) system pumps air into the exhaust on cold start to help the catalytic converter reach operating temperature faster and reduce emissions. P0410 means the system is not performing as expected — a classic Mercedes cold-start code.

Symptoms:

Check-engine light, often after cold starts
Rough running for the first minute after a cold start
May fail an emissions test
Sometimes an audible air pump noise (or conspicuous silence when the pump should run)

Common causes:

Failed secondary air pump — often killed by moisture ingestion.
Stuck or failed changeover/check valve.
Clogged air passages with carbon.
Wiring or relay faults.

How to diagnose: Listen for the SAI pump running for a few seconds after a cold start. Silence, or a pump that sounds like it is ingesting water, points to a failed pump. Check the changeover valve and vacuum control.

The fix: Replace the secondary air pump and any failed valves with genuine OEM parts, and clear carbon from the passages. These components and related electrical parts are available through our Mercedes-Benz parts and car electrical parts collections.

Code P0013 — Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 1 Exhaust)

What it means: Mercedes engines use camshaft adjusters (similar in concept to BMW's VANOS) to vary valve timing. P0013 indicates a fault in the exhaust camshaft actuator circuit on bank 1.

Symptoms:

Rough idle and reduced power
Hesitation and poor throttle response
Reduced fuel economy
Possible rattling on start-up if related to timing wear

Common causes:

Faulty camshaft adjuster magnet (solenoid) — the most common cause, often clogged with oil debris.
Low or dirty engine oil affecting the hydraulic adjuster.
Wiring/connector faults to the solenoid.
Timing component wear on high-mileage engines.

How to diagnose: Inspect and, where possible, clean the camshaft adjuster magnet. Confirm oil level and condition. Live data will show timing deviation. Because these solenoids share a failure mode, checking both banks is wise.

The fix: Replace the camshaft adjuster magnet/solenoid with a genuine OEM part, change the oil if overdue, and repair any wiring faults. Timing and adjuster components are in our engine parts collection.

Generic Codes That Still Apply to Mercedes

P0300 / P0301–P0312 — Cylinder Misfire. Random or cylinder-specific misfires from worn ignition coils, spark plugs, injectors, or the lean conditions above. Mercedes V6/V8 engines use multiple coils and plugs; replacing a full set of genuine parts resolves most misfire complaints. Ignition components live in our car electrical parts collection.

P0420 / P0430 — Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold. Underperforming catalytic converter or, more commonly, a failing oxygen sensor. Rule out O2 sensors and exhaust leaks first — a genuine sensor is far cheaper than a converter.

P0016 — Crankshaft/Camshaft Correlation. The crank and cam are out of sync, often a symptom of timing chain stretch or the M272/M273 balance-shaft/idler-gear wear that affected certain early production engines. This is a serious code worth prompt diagnosis.

For recall and safety-bulletin history that sometimes overlaps with these systems, the NHTSA database is worth a search by your model year.

Preventing Mercedes Fault Codes: Smart Maintenance

Mercedes engines reward disciplined maintenance and punish neglect. The codes above cluster around a few root causes you can get ahead of:

Use the correct MB-approved oil and change it on schedule. Camshaft adjusters and timing components depend on clean oil; long intervals invite P0013 and P0016.
Address crankcase ventilation and intake components proactively. Cracked plastic ducts and worn intake flaps cause lean codes and P2004.
Service ignition coils and plugs before they fail to prevent misfires and catalyst damage.
Don't ignore cold-start symptoms. The secondary air system (P0410) and timing rattles rarely fix themselves.

Bundling filters and wear items into one service is the economical route — our genuine OEM service kits are built for exactly that. If you are weighing the broader cost of ownership, our article on European car service costs puts it in perspective.

When to See a Professional

Several Mercedes codes are DIY-friendly: cleaning or replacing a camshaft adjuster magnet, swapping a secondary air pump, or replacing coils and plugs. Others — a P0016 correlation fault, suspected balance-shaft wear, or a stubborn fuel-trim problem — call for a Mercedes specialist with Xentry-level diagnostics. Any code paired with knocking, a hard limp-mode, or a no-start warrants stopping and diagnosing before more damage occurs.

As always, repair the cause, not the light. Clearing a code without fixing the underlying issue simply postpones the failure and risks damaging costly downstream components like the catalytic converters. For system-level technical background, Mercedes-Benz's official resources and the OBD-II reference are reliable references.

How to Read and Clear Mercedes Fault Codes Yourself

Reading a Mercedes code is straightforward with the right tool, but Mercedes systems are extensive — a single car has dozens of control modules, and the fault is not always in the engine ECU. Your options:

iCarsoft or Autel Mercedes-specific scanners — mid-range tools that read Mercedes-specific codes across multiple modules and display live data.
Xentry / DAS — the factory-level software. Comprehensive but complex and typically used by specialists.
Smartphone apps with a compatible adapter — fine for reading generic codes and basic live data, but they miss many Mercedes-specific faults.

Plug into the OBD-II port (under the dash, driver's side), run a full-system scan, and record every stored code plus its freeze-frame data. On Mercedes especially, related codes across modules often tell a fuller story — a single sensor fault can ripple into several systems.

Do not clear codes as a "fix." Clearing erases the record and the freeze-frame data but repairs nothing; the code returns once the fault is re-detected. Clear only after the repair, and be aware that clearing resets emissions readiness monitors, which can cause an inspection failure until the car completes a drive cycle.

Understanding Fuel Trims on a Mercedes

For lean/rich codes like P0170 and P0173, fuel trim data is your best diagnostic friend. Short-term fuel trim (STFT) reacts instantly to the oxygen sensors; long-term fuel trim (LTFT) is the learned average. Values near 0% are healthy.

Consistently high positive trims signal a lean condition — chase vacuum leaks, the crankcase ventilation system, and the MAF sensor. High negative trims signal a rich condition — look at fuel pressure, injectors, and the MAF. On Mercedes V6/V8 engines, comparing bank 1 and bank 2 trims can localize the problem to one side of the engine, saving you from replacing parts on both banks.

Quick Reference: Mercedes Fault Codes at a Glance

Code	Meaning	Most Likely Fix
P2004	Intake runner stuck open	Replace intake manifold / flap actuator
P0170 / P0173	Fuel trim malfunction	Fix vacuum leak; replace MAF or O2 sensor
P0410	Secondary air injection fault	Replace air pump and check valves
P0013	Cam adjuster circuit (exhaust)	Replace adjuster magnet; oil change
P0300	Cylinder misfire	Replace coils and plugs; check injectors
P0420 / P0430	Catalyst efficiency low	Replace O2 sensor; check exhaust leaks
P0016	Crank/cam correlation	Inspect timing chain / balance shaft

Treat this as a starting point — confirm with a scan and live data before ordering.

A Step-by-Step Diagnostic Workflow

When a code appears, resist the urge to immediately buy the first part associated with it. A disciplined workflow saves money and prevents the "throw parts at it" trap that so often turns a small repair into an expensive one:

Scan every module, not just the engine. Record all stored and pending codes with their freeze-frame data. On a Mercedes, a single root fault frequently sets several codes across systems.
Identify the most fundamental code. A crank/cam correlation or vacuum-leak fault will often be the cause of downstream misfire and fuel-trim codes. Fix the foundation first.
Verify with live data. Fuel trims, sensor readings, and actuator positions confirm whether a component is actually failing or merely reporting a symptom of something else.
Do the cheap, common checks before the expensive ones. Vacuum leaks, dirty MAF sensors, worn coils, and low or dirty oil cause a huge share of codes and cost little to address.
Confirm the exact part by VIN. Mercedes fitment varies by engine, year, and market. Matching the part to your VIN prevents returns and wasted labor.
Repair, then clear, then road-test. Clear the code only after the repair, then drive a full cycle to confirm it does not return and that readiness monitors reset.

Following this order consistently is the single biggest thing separating a frustrating, costly repair from a clean one. It also builds a service history that makes future diagnosis faster — a documented pattern of what has already been checked and replaced is invaluable the next time a light appears.
