Audi 2.0 & 3.0 TFSI Excessive Oil Consumption: Causes & Fixes
Excessive oil consumption on Audi 2.0 and 3.0 TFSI engines is caused mainly by worn or poorly designed piston rings that let oil slip into the combustion chamber, and by a faulty crankcase pressure (PCV) valve that pulls oil into the intake. Why TFSI engines burn oil
The TFSI family - Audi's turbocharged direct-injection petrol engines - has a long-documented tendency to consume oil, and the cause is well understood. There are two primary mechanisms.
Piston rings and oil control. The piston rings are meant to seal the combustion chamber and scrape oil back down the cylinder wall. On affected TFSI engines - particularly the EA888 2.0-litre built before around 2012 - the oil-control rings and piston design allowed oil to slip past into the combustion chamber, where it is burned along with the fuel. This is why owners see blue smoke from the exhaust and a steadily dropping dipstick. Audi acknowledged the issue and, for the worst-affected engines, ran a service campaign that could involve replacing pistons and rings with a revised design.
Crankcase pressure (PCV) valve. The second mechanism affects both the 2.0 and the 3.0 TFSI. Under certain conditions - especially stop-and-go city driving with extended idling - internal crankcase pressure conditions cause the engine to draw excess oil vapour into the intake, where it is burned. Audi's own technical service bulletins for both the 2.0 TFSI (EA888) and the 3.0 TFSI point to crankcase pressure and prescribe replacing the crankcase pressure regulating valve (the oil separator / PCV) and updating engine software as the fix. From 2013, Audi revised the design to reduce crankcase pressure at production.
A third, slower contributor is carbon build-up. Because TFSI engines use direct injection, fuel never washes over the back of the intake valves, so oil vapour drawn through the PCV system bakes into carbon deposits on the valves. Heavy carbon build-up hurts running quality and, combined with a leaking PCV, worsens oil consumption over time.
Which Audi engines are affected?
- 2.0 TFSI (EA888, roughly 2009-2011) - the most notorious for oil consumption. Fitted to A4, A5, A5 Cabriolet and Q5 of that era. Audi ran TSBs and, on the worst cases, piston/ring replacement.
- 3.0 TFSI (supercharged, roughly 2009-2012) - fitted to S4, S5, A6, A7 and Q7. Audi's TSB addresses crankcase pressure and prescribes replacing the crankcase pressure regulating valve. Owners report it responds well to the oil-separator fix and to a heavier oil grade.
- Earlier 2.0 TFSI (EA113) - the pre-EA888 engine in cars like the 2007 TT and early S3. It is a different engine and is not covered by the EA888 piston campaign, though high-mileage examples can still consume oil through worn rings or valve guides.

Warning signs of TFSI oil consumption
- The low-oil warning appears between services, or the dipstick drops to minimum well before the next change.

- You're topping up oil regularly - roughly a litre every 1,000-2,000 km is well beyond healthy.

Some oil consumption is normal on any engine, and it tends to rise over the engine's life. But a sudden increase - a car that used almost no oil suddenly needing litres between services - is not normal and points to a developing fault that should be diagnosed, not ignored. How the fix works
Diagnosis starts with a formal oil-consumption measurement (Audi has a defined procedure) to confirm the rate is genuinely excessive. From there the fix depends on the cause:
- PCV / oil separator dominant: replace the crankcase pressure regulating valve with the updated part and apply the software update. This is the first and cheapest intervention, and on the 3.0 TFSI it often resolves the complaint on its own.
- Piston rings dominant (2.0 EA888): the definitive fix is replacing pistons and oil-control rings with the revised design - a major job, but the permanent cure on badly affected engines.
- Carbon build-up: walnut-blasting the intake valves restores running quality; keeping the PCV healthy slows re-accumulation.

TFSI oil consumption in the GCC: heat makes it worse
Gulf conditions actively worsen TFSI oil consumption. Extreme ambient heat means the engine and its oil run hotter, and hotter oil thins - thinner oil slips past worn rings more easily and evaporates more readily into the crankcase vapour the PCV system pulls into the intake. How to run an oil consumption test
Before assuming your TFSI has a problem, measure it properly - "it feels like it's using oil" isn't a diagnosis, and Audi uses a defined consumption test for exactly this reason. You can replicate the principle at home. Start with a fresh oil change so you know the level is exactly at full and the oil is clean. Record the odometer reading. Then check the level regularly with the car parked level and the engine cooled, using the dipstick or the digital oil reading, and log how far the car travels for each measurable drop in level.
The number that matters is distance per litre consumed. Every engine uses some oil, and a modest amount is normal - but if your TFSI is consuming around a litre every 1,000-2,000 km, or if consumption has suddenly jumped on an engine that previously used almost none, that's the signal to investigate. Carbon build-up: the hidden partner to oil consumption
Oil consumption rarely travels alone on a TFSI - it usually arrives alongside carbon build-up, and the two feed each other. Because TFSI engines use direct injection, fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder and never washes over the back of the intake valves the way it does on a port-injected engine. That means the intake valves have no self-cleaning mechanism. Meanwhile, the crankcase ventilation system routes oil vapour through the intake tract - and when a PCV valve is leaking oil into the intake, that vapour is far heavier with oil than it should be. The oil vapour bakes onto the hot intake valves and hardens into carbon deposits.
