The Complete Audi Coolant Guide: G12, G12++, G13, and G12evo Specifications, Mixing Rules, and Maintenance

Audi’s precision engineering delivers class-leading performance, but its high-tolerance turbocharged engines and complex multi-circuit cooling loops leave zero room for generic fluids. Grabbing a generic "universal" jug from an auto parts store can cause additive precipitation, plugged heater cores, and premature water pump failures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why Audi Engines Demand Dedicated Coolant Chemistry

An Audi cooling system does more than dissipate engine heat. Modern TFSI and TDI engines rely on high thermal efficiency to balance low emissions with rapid turbo spooling. Temperatures are managed across intricate passages through aluminum blocks, composite thermostat housings, magnesium castings, oil-to-water plate coolers, transmission heat exchangers, and charge-air intercoolers.

CONVENTIONAL COOLANT vs. AUDI OE SPECIFICATION

[ Green Conventional Antifreeze (IAT) ]
  • Relies on heavy inorganic phosphates and silicates.
  • Forms a thick blanket layer over all metals.
  • Drops thermal transfer efficiency by up to 15%.
  • Additives deplete and precipitate out within 2 years (24,000 miles).

  [ Audi Factory Spec (Si-OAT / PSi-OAT) ]
  • Organic carboxylate base with micro-silicate passivators.
  • Molecular-thin protective layer directly on hot aluminum surfaces.
  • Maximum thermal transfer with zero inhibitor drop-out.
  • Extended service life (5–6+ years / 150,000 km).

Using the wrong additive package causes several issues:

Silicate Drop-Out: Inorganic silicates can fall out of solution when mixed with organic acids, forming an abrasive gel that plugs heater core channels.
Corrosion of Thin-Wall Aluminum: Modern brazed aluminum cores in Audi radiators use walls thinner than 0.5 mm. Incompatible pH levels cause pinhole corrosion within months.
Cavitation Pitting: Turbos create intense heat cycles that cause micro-boiling near exhaust ports. Low-grade coolants fail to protect against cavitation, pitting water pump impellers and cylinder jackets.

2. The Audi & VAG Coolant Evolution: G12 to G12evo

Volkswagen Auto Group (VAG) has revised its internal material standard (TL 774) multiple times. While these coolants are often identified by color, relying solely on color is dangerous because aftermarket brands use varying dyes. The engineering specification printed on the bottle is what matters.

G11 (VW TL 774-C): The Pre-1996 Blue Era

Base Chemistry: Inorganic Acid Technology (IAT).
Color: Blue or Blue-Green.
Attributes: High in silicates, formulated for cast-iron blocks and copper-brass radiators.
The Caution: Never mix G11 with G12. Mixing G11 with organic acid formulas turns the coolant into a thick, brown sludge that clogs the cooling system.

G12 & G12+ (VW TL 774-D & F): The Organic Acid Revolution

Base Chemistry: Organic Acid Technology (OAT), 100% silicate-free.
Color: Red (G12) / Bright Pink (G12+).
Application: Introduced in 1996 across the B5 A4 and C5 A6 to protect all-aluminum engines.
Key Traits: G12 eliminated silicates in favor of organic carboxylate acids, preventing abrasive wear on mechanical water pump seals. G12+ (TL 774-F) arrived in 2000, refining the formula to allow emergency top-ups with G11 without instant gelation (though mixing remains bad practice).

G12++ (VW TL 774-G): Introducing Silicated OAT (Si-OAT)

Base Chemistry: Lobrid Technology (Si-OAT: Organic Acid + Fast-Acting Silicates).
Color: Violet / Pinkish-Purple.
Application: Factory standard from 2005 to 2010 on high-output engines like the B7/B8 A4, C6 A6, and early 3.0T supercharged platforms.
Key Traits: Pure OAT required thousands of miles to establish its protective layer on bare aluminum. G12++ reintroduced a small, controlled amount of liquid silicate. This created an immediate surface shield while retaining long-life organic acids, protecting high-revving aluminum engines from localized flash boiling.

G13 (VW TL 774-J): The Eco-Glycerin Phase

Base Chemistry: Si-OAT with Glycerin base (Ethylene Glycol + 20% recycled bio-glycerin).
Color: Violet / Lilac.
Application: Standard fill from late 2010 through 2018 across the B8.5/B9 A4, C7 A6, and Q5.
Key Traits: Developed to lower carbon emissions during manufacturing by replacing petroleum-derived glycol with bio-glycerin. While environmentally friendly, G13 relied heavily on constant silicate replenishment to stay stable under high heat, which led to the factory use of "Silikat" tea-bags in expansion tanks.

G12evo (VW TL 774-L): The Current Factory Standard

Base Chemistry: Phosphated/Silicated Lobrid (PSi-OAT), Ethylene Glycol base.
Color: Pinkish-Purple.
Application: Factory standard from 2019 onward across all Audi platforms, and the universal service replacement for previous specifications.
Key Traits: G12evo resolved the stability limitations of G13 under extreme thermal cycling, returning to a pure ethylene glycol base paired with a modern PSi-OAT inhibitor package. It provides faster passivation on aluminum alloys, protects against galvanic reactions in electric and hybrid systems, and eliminates the need for physical silica reservoir bags.

Critical Rules for Coolant Top-Offs

G12evo Supersedes G12+, G12++, and G13: If you visit an Audi dealership parts counter today, you will be handed a jug of G12evo (Part No: G-12E-050-A2 or ready-mix G-12E-050-1G-DSP). G12evo is backward-compatible with G12+, G12++, and G13 systems.
The G11 Sludge Warning: Never add G12, G12++, or G12evo to a vintage Audi running old blue G11. The organic and inorganic packages clash, causing additive dropout that clogs the radiator tubes.
In an Emergency: If the coolant warning flashes and you cannot find G12++ or G12evo, add clean distilled water instead of a generic "green" or "yellow" universal coolant. Adding a cup or two of distilled water dilutes the freeze point slightly, but preserves system chemistry. You can correct the concentration later.

Why Was the Bag Put There?

When VAG engineered G13 with bio-glycerin, the coolant struggled to maintain silicate levels over long drain intervals. To compensate, engineers placed a small fabric packet filled with solid silicate granules inside a baffled chamber within the expansion tank.

As hot coolant circulated, the packet slowly dissolved silicates into the fluid, replenishing the corrosion inhibitor package.

The Failure Mode

After 50,000 to 100,000 miles of heat cycling:

The fabric packet degrades, turning brittle.
The packet splits open at its seam, dumping hundreds of tiny silica beads directly into the cooling system.
These beads travel downstream and lodge in the narrow passages of the heater core and the engine oil cooler.

The first symptom is usually a loss of cabin heat on the passenger side (or across the entire cabin), followed by cold-start temperature spikes. Flushing rarely clears these trapped beads. The standard repair requires removing the entire dashboard to replace the heater core, often costing over $1,500 in labor.

6. Why "Universal All-Makes" Antifreeze Ruins Audi Systems

Generic green or yellow coolants sold at big-box retailers are often labeled "Safe for All Makes and All Models." In high-performance European platforms, this is marketing fiction.

Universal coolants are designed to meet American and Asian domestic vehicle baselines (such as ASTM D3306), which permit high levels of phosphates or 2-EHA (2-ethylhexanoic acid).

2-EHA Hazards: Many universal coolants use 2-EHA as a plasticizer inhibitor. This chemical attacks silicone gaskets and nylon plastics, accelerating leaks at Audi thermostat housings, auxiliary water pumps, and plastic coolant crossovers.
Corrosion Resistance: Genuine Audi formulas use Sebacic or Dodecanedioic acids alongside azole inhibitors. These create a passive molecular barrier over copper heater cores and aluminum cylinder heads without damaging plastic fittings.

Always verify your coolant meets VW TL 774-D, F, G, J, or L. If it does not explicitly list these standards, keep it away from your Audi.

7. Step-by-Step DIY Service: Flushing, Vacuum Filling, and Bleeding

Servicing an Audi cooling system requires proper procedure. Because the heater core, turbo loop, and auxiliary radiators are arranged at varying heights, simply pouring fluid into the expansion tank will trap air pockets. This can lead to localized boiling and warped cylinder heads within miles.

       PROFESSIONAL SERVICE STEPS

[ Step 1: Drain ] ──► Drain from lower radiator hose / drain cock.
[ Step 2: Flush ] ──► Flush with distilled water until discharge runs clear.
[ Step 3: Evacuate ] ──► Pull 25+ inHg vacuum using an Airlift tool.
  [ Step 4: Refill ] ──► Draft 50/50 G12evo/distilled water under vacuum.
[ Step 5: De-Aerate ] ──► Slide heater core hose to expose factory bleed hole.

Essential Tools and Materials

Coolant: Genuine Audi G12evo concentrate (or approved OEM brands like Pentosin Pentofrost E, Motul Inugel, Rowe HIGHTEC ANTIFREEZE, or Febi Bilstein).
Water: 2 to 3 gallons of pure steam-distilled or demineralized water. Never use tap or spring water; their minerals will coat internal passages.
Pneumatic Vacuum Refill Tool: (e.g., OEMTools or UView Airlift).
VCDS / OBDeleven: (Optional, but required on newer models to cycle auxiliary electric water pumps during bleeding).

Step-by-Step Execution

Step 1: Draining the System

Let the engine cool completely. Opening a hot expansion tank can cause severe steam burns.
Remove the plastic engine undertray.
Unscrew the expansion tank pressure cap.
Locate the lower radiator outlet hose or the red drain valve on the lower-left corner of the radiator. Detach the spring retaining clip and gently back the hose off to drain the old coolant into a catch pan.
If servicing a 3.0T or 4.0T, uncouple the lower quick-connect couplings on the auxiliary side-coolers to drain the remaining fluid.

Step 2: The Distilled Water Flush

Reattach the lower hoses and fill the system with pure distilled water.
Run the engine with the cabin heat set to maximum temperature and low fan speed until the thermostat opens (roughly 90°C / 194°F).
Shut off the engine, let it cool, and drain the system again. Repeat this process until the drained water runs completely clear.

Step 3: The Airlift Vacuum Refill (The Only Approved Method)

Fit the expanding rubber adapter of your vacuum refill tool securely into the expansion tank neck.
Connect clean shop air (90–100 psi) to the tool's venturi nozzle.
Open the valve and draw a deep vacuum of at least 25 to 27 inHg.
Watch the flexible radiator hoses collapse flat. This confirms that air is being pulled from every passage.
Close the vacuum valve and monitor the gauge for 3 minutes. If the needle drops, an active leak exists at a hose, clamp, or flange that must be addressed before proceeding.

     └──┴──────────────────────────────────► Time

Submerge the tool's fluid pickup tube into a bucket of pre-mixed 50/50 G12evo and distilled water.
Open the fluid intake valve. Atmospheric pressure will push the coolant into the engine, filling the block, heater core, and radiator passages without leaving air pockets.

Step 4: The Heater Core Bleed Port

Locate the two rubber coolant hoses entering the cabin firewall on the driver or passenger side of the battery plenum.
One of these hoses has a printed white circle or arrow marking a small bleeder hole.
Release the hose clamp and slide the rubber hose backward along the plastic heater core tube until the bleeder hole is exposed past the end of the pipe.
With the engine idling, wait until a solid, steady stream of bubble-free coolant squirts from the hole, then slide the hose back into position and reclamp it.

8. Diagnosing Common Audi Cooling Issues and Leaks

Modern Audis are engineered to run hot for thermal efficiency, which places heavy stress on plastic and composite cooling components.

COMMON AUDI COOLING SYSTEM LEAK SITES

  [ Thermostat / Water Pump Module ] ──► B8/B9 2.0T: Plastic housing cracks/warps.
  [ Valley Coolant Crossover Pipe ] ──► C7 3.0T: Plastic hard-pipe splits under heat.
  [ Auxiliary After-Run Water Pump ] ──► 2.0T & 4.0T: Electrical casing hairline leaks.
  [ Radiator End-Tank Crimp Seams ] ──► Aluminum-to-plastic crimp gasket failure.

1. The 2.0 TFSI Water Pump / Thermostat Union Leak

The integrated water pump and thermostat housing on EA888 Gen 2 and Gen 3 engines (found in the A4, A5, and Q5) uses a composite plastic body bolted to the front of the aluminum engine block.

Engine oil seeping from the upper timing cover or oil filter housing gasket often drips onto this plastic unit. The oil softens the housing's rubber profile gasket, causing the composite plastic to swell and crack.

If your Audi is losing coolant and you notice a crusty white or pink residue beneath the intake manifold, the thermostat/water pump module needs replacement.

2. The 3.0T "Valley" Coolant Pipe Failure

On the supercharged 3.0T V6 (EA837), several composite plastic coolant hard pipes and the crankcase breather (PCV) sit buried deep in the engine "V" beneath the Eaton supercharger.

Over 70,000 to 100,000 miles, continuous heat soak turns these pipes brittle. Coolant begins seeping and pools in the engine valley, evaporating on hot castings and leaving behind a sweet maple syrup smell without leaving drops on the floor.

Fixing this leak requires unbolting the supercharger and replacing all under-charger coolant lines, the thermostat, and the PCV module simultaneously.

3. Coolant Migration Through Wiring Harnesses

A subtle issue found on newer Audis involves electronically actuated coolant control valves and solenoids.

When an internal diaphragm fails, pressurized coolant can push past the internal electrical pins directly into the wiring harness connector. Through capillary action, the pressurized coolant travels along the copper strands of the wiring harness, occasionally reaching the Engine Control Module (ECM) and corroding multi-pin terminal blocks.

Whenever you disconnect a cooling sensor or solenoid, check the electrical plug for any traces of pink residue.

9. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What coolant does my Audi A4 take?

The correct coolant for an Audi A4 depends on the production year:

1996–2005 (B5/B6): G12 or G12+ (VW TL 774-D/F).
2006–2012 (B7/B8): G12++ or G13 (VW TL 774-G/J).
2013–2018 (B8.5/B9): G13 (VW TL 774-J).
2019+ (B9.5): G12evo (VW TL 774-L).

If you are performing a service today, Audi G12evo is backward-compatible with all these generations and serves as the official factory replacement.

Can I use Prestone or Peak universal coolant in my Audi?

No. Universal coolants use generic additive packages (often including 2-EHA, high phosphates, or aggressive borates) that are incompatible with Audi metallurgy and plastics. Over time, these chemicals can degrade silicone seals, soften composite water pump housings, and react with existing fluids to form clogging gels. Use only coolants meeting VW TL 774 standards (such as genuine Audi/VW fluid, Pentosin Pentofrost, Rowe, or Febi Bilstein).

Can I mix G12 and G13 coolant?

Yes, G12+ and G12++ can be safely mixed with G13. They share an organic acid backbone and are chemically compatible. However, original early G12 (non-plus, red) should not be mixed with G13, as additive precipitation can occur. While G12++ and G13 mix without forming gels, keeping fluid types consistent preserves the full design lifespan of the corrosion inhibitor package.

Why is my Audi coolant pink, violet, or purple?

Audi dyes its coolants to help identify the chemical family:

G12 / G12+: Red to Bright Pink.
G12++: Violet.
G13: Violet to Lilac.
G12evo: Pinkish-Purple.

If the coolant in your reservoir appears murky brown, rust-colored, or opaque, someone likely mixed incompatible fluids (such as blue G11 or green universal with pink G12). If this happens, flush the entire system with distilled water immediately.

What should I do if my coolant level is low and I don't have Audi coolant?

If the warning light illuminates on your instrument cluster, add pure distilled or demineralized water for an immediate top-up. A small amount of distilled water will safely mix with your existing coolant, diluting freeze protection slightly without destabilizing the additive package. Never add tap water, bottled drinking water, or generic green coolant from a gas station.

How often should I flush the coolant in my Audi?

While Audi documentation often describes factory fills as "lifetime," professional European technicians recommend a full drain, flush, and refill every 4 to 5 years or 50,000 to 60,000 miles (80,000 to 100,000 km). The thermal stress generated by high-boost turbochargers gradually breaks down corrosion inhibitors, and fresh fluid keeps the thin aluminum tubes of your heater core and radiators protected.
